Humana Challenge: Weather is perfect

In terms of the weather, it’s an average day in La Quinta for mid-January, but that means conditions are perfect for golfers at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.

On average, highs reach the low 70s in La Quinta in mid-January, and the PGA Tour’s extended forecast calls for highs in the low to mid-70s this weekend with light winds. That’s a welcome change from last weekend’s frigid temperatures. (Granted, highs in the 50s are considered frigid for the Coachella Valley.)

Will scores go lower because of the ideal weather? That remains to be seen, but I can’t recall better weather conditions in the five years I have covered the event. During the first Humana Challenge I covered in 2009, the wind picked up during the final round after four perfect days. Bad weather continued to wreak havoc in following years. Rain washed out the second round in 2010, forcing me to buy an umbrella at Target on my way to PGA West and players to finish Monday. (I think I have used that umbrella only two or three times since then.) Gusty winds suspended play last year during the third round.

But if the forecast holds, the weather won’t mess with the event this year, and that will surely make up for last week’s cold.
